The University of Hawaii has found its .xxx web address for sale on the auction site ebay.
Just four weeks after domain names ending in .xxx have been released to purchase for the adult entertainment industry.

Many universities bought up their potential porn website addresses to avoid any link to the university and protect their reputations.
The University of Hawaii did not, and has now become a victim of ‘cybersquatting’.

The problem occurs when someone not linked with an organisation buys a web address that is and attempts to make money by selling it back to them.
The domain name, TheUniversityOfHawaii.xxx, was discovered on ebay with starting price of $100,000.

“They should be concerned about their reputation. But before giving in to these extortionists, I’d start to do research on the alternative ways which are much more cost effective in maintaining their reputation,’ said cyber crime expert Chris Duque.
Duque said the university should put a disclaimer on its official website, stating clearly that any adult websites have no link to the university.
‘We don’t condone, we don’t sanction, we don’t authorise any sex sites for our organisation. If you do happen to come across this, please contact us,’ Duque said.

Many educational organisations brought their .xxx domains before any ‘cybersquatters’ had the chance, costing around $100 a year per domain.
Duque suggests that rather than attempt to buy up every domain linked to your organisation simply use a disclaimer and a warning stating that legal action will be taken against any misrepresenting your organisation.

The ebay seller calling himself ‘chrisasaur’ has also listed ‘IhadYourMama.com’ with a starting bid of $50,000, HugeBoobies.xxx with an auction price of $2,500 as well as the university website.
